Election Day Highlights: Don’t Forget to Vote, ALPA’s EVP Meet & Greet

It’s finally here! Election Day in the United States. After taking a  trip to the polls to cast your vote, we thought this would be a good time to highlight ALPA’s Executive Vice President elections that took place in October, including the first female pilot to serve as an ALPA EVP.

Meet the new slate who will begin their term on Jan. 1, 2017:

  • Group A: Capt. Andrew Massey (Delta), reelected
  • Group A: Capt. Russell "Russ" Sklenka (FedEx Express), reelected
  • Group A: F/O Mike Hamilton (United)
  • Group B1: Capt. Michael McMackin (JetBlue), reelected (Representing JetBlue, Envoy, Endeavor, Frontier, Hawaiian, Piedmont, and ATI)
  • Group B2: F/O Karen Lacy (ExpressJet), the first female EVP (Representing ExpressJet, ASA, PSA, Virgin America, Compass, Sun Country, and Island Air)
  • Group B3: Capt. Matthew Chadwick (Air Wisconsin) (Representing Alaska, Spirit, Mesa, Air Wisconsin, Trans States, and CommutAir)
  • Group C: Capt. Dan Adamus (Jazz), reelected (Representing Air Transat, Bearskin, Calm Air, Canadian North, First Air, Kelowna Flightcraft, Jazz Aviation, and Wasaya)

The seven EVPs are elected by caucuses from each of ALPA’s airline groupings during Board of Directors meetings – as mentioned above, the last election occurred in October 2016. Each EVP serves a two-year term. The EVPS and the four national officers make up the Executive Council. The council meets at least six times per year to work on furthering objectives and policies set by the Association’s Board of Directors and Executive Board.

As we look to the future, Election Day seems like the perfect time to also take a look at ALPA’s past presidents. Since the founding of ALPA over 80 years ago, these elected representatives have worked with their fellow pilots to build consensus about what’s best for the profession and the industry:

  • Captain David Behncke (1931-1951)
  • Clarence Sayen (1951-1962)
  • Captain Charles Ruby (1962-1970)
  • Captain John J. O’Donnell (1971-1982)
  • Captain Henry Duffy (1983-1990)
  • Captain Randolph Babitt (1991-1998)
  • Captain Duane Woerth (1999-2006)
  • Captain John Prater (2007-2010)
  • Captain Lee Moak (2011-2014)
  • Captain Tim Canoll (2015 – Current)
